From Communications director – May/June 2020

Janice Crosswhite OAM,
Communications Director
Welcome to the Update newsletter and welcome to winter or summer! We hope you and your loved ones are safe and well. What a year it has been so far! One that has been challenging for the sport and physical activity sector worldwide, as the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt.

IAPESGW is focused on influencing a restoration and global recovery post-pandemic, to make sure that women and girls are not left by the wayside, lacking in resources and support. We need to continue our efforts, advocating for women and girls, noting that different countries and cultures will react with different priorities. We are reliant on men and women to stand up and speak up, to prevent a backward movement in girls and women’s sport and physical education/activity levels. It is very important that we work together to prevent a generational loss in the momentum that has been achieved in the past few years. We are part of one team and stronger together. The lessons of COVID-19 are global, while local advocacy and movements mirror the values of sport: inclusion, respect and equality.

UIA Round Table Asia-Pacific 2020
Virtual Round Table hosted in Seoul, Korea
The UIA Round Tables provide an opportunity to learn through networking and through practice, to meet other international associations and share experience and knowledge to help you run your organization better.

Indian Ministry of Sport
Since early June IAPESGW has been cooperating with the Indian Ministry of Sport to deliver 25 days of a certificate course for PE teachers and community coaches. We are very fortunate to be part of this experience because it is also giving us (IAPESGW) visibility in that part of the world. A big thank you to our board members who are involved either as a speaker or panelist. The initial sessions featured the Indian Minister for Youth Affairs and Sport, Shri Kerin Rijiju and President Rosa and former President of IAPESGW Darlene Kluka, now Vice President of ICSSPE.

Women and Sport in Asia
Progress has been made with our publication ‘Women and Sport in Asia’.  So far, we have involved 30 authors and co-authors.

Global Index for Quality Physical Education and Sport
The ‘Global Index for Quality Physical Education and Sport’ (coordinated by Walter Ho), has IAPESGW as one of the cooperating organizations. We have extended the invitation to all our members as we believe it could be attractive for some to participate in this research experience and possibly be in a publication.

Global Observatory for Women
Preliminary work to support the creation of the Global Observatory for women is underway. IAPESGW is represented there by our former President Tansin Benn, who continues to do much good work across many nations.
