Published by Routledge in 2011 and edited by Tansin Benn, Gertrud Pfister, and Haifaa Jawad, Muslim Women and Sport emerged from an international project held in Oman in 2008, coordinated by IAPESGW with the support of Sultan Qaboos University. The meeting brought together researchers from different regions of the world and also resulted in the international declaration “Accept and Respect.” The book brings together 16 chapters exploring the relationships between women, sport, physical education, religion, gender, and culture through studies and experiences from different countries. It addresses topics such as women’s leadership, participation in sport, cultural barriers, sport in contexts of conflict and war, and the experiences of women athletes. The publication represents an important record of IAPESGW’s international work in promoting and expanding opportunities for girls and women in physical education and sport.
